Chapter 11
The unfamiliar warmth of a body tangled with hers woke her from a deep sleep. That, and the arm curled possessively around her waist, heavy as a manacle. Dreams of flickering candles, magic swirling in the air and warm breath brushing against bare skin morphed into memories and a smile lifted her lips in response.
For better or worse, she and Malek were really and truly married now. The dance theyâd been cautiously skirting through for almost a century had changed irrevocably and she couldnât help a tingle of excitement at what was to come.
The light brush of lips against her shoulder pulled her eyes open and she looked up into Malekâs satisfied gaze.
âHello.â
âHello.â
âWeâre married.â
âYes.â
They looked at each other silently for a long moment before Sophieâs lips pursed.
âThereâs going to have to be some changes around here.â
âOf course. But, Iâll give you some time to adjust to them.â
Malek matter-of-fact response caused a bark of laughter to burst out of her as she shook her head at him.
âOh, itâs not me doing all the changes, buddy! Iâve had almost a century to make listsâ she told him with a twitch of her lips and Malek propped his head up on one arm and quirked one brow.
âLists? And, what types of things are on these âlistsâ?â
âOh, all sorts of things. But, the first thing weâre going to work on is an open door for friends and family. Our home is going to be the same gathering place that I grew up in,â she informed him archly, âno more scaring people away.â
âScaring people keeps the house private-and secureâ he pointed out and she rolled her eyes.
âWhich are important-but more important is having a home filled with laughter and friends. Good memories.â
He considered her words before shrugging. âIâll consider it.â
Sophie pushed up on her elbows as one eyebrow arched up. âThatâs actually the top thing on my list. This is not going to be a marriage where you just make a declaration and thatâs it! âIâll consider itâ-I am your wife, not one of your minions! Donât forget I have a sword and I know how to use itâ she ended with a mutter and his lips twitched before inclining his head.
âIâll take that into consideration.â
âYouâre funny.â
She glanced down and then stopped before pushing his arm off her stomach.
âWhat is that?â she demanded, staring in bemusement at the Mark that now branded her skin. Silvery-black magic swirled in a labyrinthine design of complicated swirls and symbols at the center of her belly in a liquid silver river.
âItâs my Mark. It brands you as mine and untouchable if they donât want to die. Itâll fade in a little while so itâs only faint lines on your skin, but the magic can be called up if need beâ he told her, reached out to trace the liquid magic with one finger.
âWhat kind of Mark is it? I donât think Iâve seen anything like itâ she admitted, still in shock at the sight of it. Most races
